Muslim Law
Muslim law refers to the legal framework that governs the personal matters of Muslims in India, based on the teachings of the Quran, Hadith (traditions of Prophet Muhammad), and other Islamic principles. It primarily covers matters such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and maintenance. Adv. Anupama Sharma explains that Muslim law is a combination of Sharia law, which forms the basis of personal laws, and statutory laws enacted by the government. In cases related to marriage, for instance, Muslim law allows for the institution of Nikah (marriage), and provides rules for the dissolution of marriage, such as Talaq (divorce) and Khula (divorce initiated by the wife).

Furthermore, Muslim law also governs the rights of inheritance, where family members, particularly children and spouses, are entitled to specific shares of the deceased's property as per Islamic inheritance principles. Adv. Anupama Sharma notes that while personal laws for Muslims have undergone some changes through legislation, many aspects still rely on religious principles, especially in matters not covered by secular laws.
